Bead Alert

About this app

This is the "Genius Hour" project made by Embrie with a little help from her family! The more we thought about it, the more it seemed like something that really should exist. The hosting costs are low for now and we plan to keep it around for at least the next 5 years (till 2030).

The idea

Remember the joy of trading friendship bracelets? Remember the time when all the Swifties (tm) gathered together concert after concert to see Taylor at the Eras Tour and of course trade bracelets? Now, imagine that same fun, but with the power to keep your children safe! Inspired by the spirit of connection, I, along with my family, created BeadAlert.org – a revolutionary bracelet app that combines personalized style with essential medical and safety information.

What makes us different?

Each Bead Alert bracelet allows you to represent vital information through your own creation of charming beads. Does your child have a peanut allergy? A cute peanut bead can be their identifier. Allergic to bees? How about an adorable bumble bee bead that serves as a discreet yet clear indicator.

Bead Alert goes beyond visual cues. Each bracelet contains an NFC chip. In case of an emergency, a simple scan with any NFC-enabled smartphone will instantly bring up the wearer’s critical information. This could include allergies, medical conditions, emergency contacts, and more, ensuring swift and informed assistance when it matters the most. Future versions of the app will also add the ability to alert loved ones of issues in real time.

Wearable safety

Imagine the reassurance of knowing that if your child has an allergic reaction, caregivers can quickly access the information they need. Or picture the relief if your little one gets separated in a crowded place – a quick scan of their bead alert can display your contact number, helping you to reunite swiftly.

F.A.Q.

Do I need to purchase a bracelet from you to use BeadAlert.org?

No, you can use BeadAlert.org without buying a bracelet from us. You just need a tiny NFC chip that you can get from many retailers and an app on your phone to write the URL to the NFC chip. That said, we would love the support, and our beads made to alert about allergies are so cute!

How durable are the bracelets?

Our bracelets are designed with active kids in mind! The beads are securely attached, and the NFC chip is embedded to withstand daily wear and tear. However, like any jewelry, they should be treated with care.

Is the information stored on the NFC chip secure?

The NFC chip itself only stores a unique URL that points to the information on our secure website. The actual medical and contact details are stored securely in our database and are only displayed when the specific bead's URL is accessed. Also we limit the the data we collect to just name, email, and phone number and allow you to hide the pieces you don't think are relevant.

Can I update the information linked to a bracelet?

Yes! Once you register you can log into your BeadAlert.org account at any time to update contact details, medical information, or privacy settings for each bracelet.

The Tech

We are hosting this at Digital Ocean in a VM running Linux. It's using pm2 to run a node 22 app written in JavaScript/Node and Svelte. The database is in Supabase . . . a hosting service for real time Postgres. If this takes off, the idea is to create a Flutter app for programming the NFC chip on bracelets but first we have to sell some brackets to fund the development.
